Group Members: Casey Baird, Faith Stahl and Mandi O'BrienDear Amy,
I understand your defense for soccer, but I believe that your rebuttal was based on a logical fallacy, specifically a hasty generalization. Before you could fully analyze Webb’s jeremiad “How Soccer Is Ruining America,” you assumed he was against soccer, but in truth, his article was purely satire. Webb has taken the same stance as you, only he chose to use irony, rather than facts, to get his point across. I can’t help but notice the tone you chose to use within your rebuttal, one wholly based on a bad temper with displays of vindictiveness: “...I will try to be as nice as possible in this but that could have been the dumbest thing I have ever read in my life.” Your biased attitude kept you from seeing Webb’s purpose behind his essay, leading to your hasty generalization. You jumped to the conclusion that Webb was against soccer, you must not have read his very last sentence, “Nonetheless, I must say that my kids and I come from a soccer game a very happy family”(269), carefully. That was Webb’s final sign that he was actually a soccer lover, it was explicit, in case someone missed his first clues. You obviously missed the previous clues. You let your own attitude get the better of you, making you seem almost as ignorant as you claim Webb to be. I have to admit, you tried very hard to argue that Webb is an “I.I.A”, but your logic wasn't correct either. I will tell you that your rebuttal was filled with numerous attempts of logical statements but since you failed to see the real nature of this jeremiad, they are invalid. You list some strategic points about soccer, about baseball and even about religion. Except, all of the logic you do use is plagued by your bias towards the situation. You overlooked the fact that some people do not find baseball boring and that some people do not find soccer to be “one of the most heartbreaking games”; those are just examples of what you attempted to use as logic. Logic is based on fact, and your attempts at logic were based on a matter of opinion. I believe I can give you an A for effort, but your rebuttal was definitely subpar. Before you write a rebuttal, you should analyze the jeremiad closely. Stephen H. Webb’s message went right over your head, leading you to false logic and hasty generalization. Lastly, I want to say that I hope you reread Webb’s satire and realize all of your mistakes. Webb is just like you, a soccer lover. Yours Truly, Faith, Casey and Mandi |
